At Bayside Orthotic Clinic we specialise in orthotics to help leg and foot pain, often poorly aligned feet can lead to other problems such as knee pain, hip pain and even back pain. The foot is a complex structure consisting of 26 bones which all work together as we walk. Unfortunately the foot is one of the most neglected parts of the body, we all take our children to have their eyes checked at a young age and visit the Dentist regularly but unfortunately many of us don’t get our feet checked until we are in pain.

We can see that in a child of 6 months most of the bones are cartilage at 2 years of age the bones are starting to form, and as an adult they are fully formed. It is in the time 2 to adulthood that is most critical if the alignment is not perfect we may be able to change the misalignment. This it is why it is really important to have a child's feet checked before 3 years of age.

Some conditions which may affect a child’s foot include Metatarsus adductus this foot deformity characterised by a sharp, inward angle of the front half of the foot. It is thought to occur as a result of the infant's position inside the uterus where the feet are bent inward at the instep. This condition can generally be treated successfully if it is detected at an early enough age.
