In some people, the feet point inward, this is called intoeing or "pigeon toes." Most people's feet point outward, Inward pointing feet are very common in very young children, but by two or three we usually see it disappear. If a gradual reduction in the angle is not noticed then the child should be checked by a podiatrist. If it does not go away then it must be treated to prevent the child from having problems later in life. Some children constantly trip and this can cause problems for the childs self esteem. In a few cases we have seen children trip and fall flat on their face which resulted in them breaking their teeth A very few children have a severe twist in the leg bone (tibia) or thigh bone (femur), which might bother them because it looks bad. Sometimes this problem requires surgery. Another cause of intoeing in infants is secondary to a turning inward of the front part of the foot. This is called metatarsus adductus and is caused by the way your baby was positioned before he was born. Although it turns inward, the foot can be easily be moved to a normal position, however it is important that we see the child at an early age to treat this condition successfully.
